There are no limits or boundaries to how big data and analytics can be applied to touch individual lives, improve how we live, work, operate cities and factories, run governments and manage businesses. Whether in Southeast Europe or the remotest parts of Africa, in public good or in government, in small businesses or in large enterprises, whether it is applied locally or over the cloud—the opportunities to utilize big data and analytics exist in all aspects of our lives.

For example, IBM has recently announced a citizen engagement and analytics system in Sierra Leone that enables communities affected by Ebola to communicate their issues and concerns directly to the government.

We place sensors in the fields and farms; by collecting real-time data on weather, soil and air quality, crop maturity, equipment costs and availability, we can now use mathematical models to predict future conditions and make better decisions with regard to when to plant, when to harvest and when to fertilize, helping increase the yield while minimizing the impact to the environment.

In education, using content analytics, machine learning and predictive modeling of longitudinal student records, we are now able to identify similar students based on their pattern of learning, predict performance and learning needs and align specific content and successful teaching techniques with each student to enable their best performance.

We now have capabilities to mine medical literature, research and electronic health records, and look for improvements in treatments, find personalized therapies, define new healthcare benchmarks and best practices. We are sequencing genomes looking to cure cancer.

Both data science and machine learning as a service has its own use and important into various fields but both are based on data that can be gathered, analyzed and applied into predicting certain answers in a specific filed. Data science is simply related with data gathering and analysis while machine learning datasets are the process of feeding data sets for training the machines with the help of certain algorithms as per the requirements.

Nikoleta Stavros

Machine learning algorithms are algorithms that learn (often predictive) models from data. I.e., instead of formulating "rules" manually, a machine learning algorithm will learn the model for you.

There were some good examples in the video of when and how Big Data can be used.  Here is an article that details 10 major areas in which big data is currently being used to excellent advantage in practice.

Thank you for the great article Claudia, I learn a lot!

Driven by specialized analytics systems and software, as well as high-powered computing systems, big data analytics offers various business benefits, including new revenue opportunities, more effective marketing, better customer service, improved operational efficiency and competitive advantages over rivals.

Humans are visual and AI is designed to emulate human brains. Therefore, teaching machines to recognize and categorize images is a crucial part of AI. Image recognition also helps machines to learn (as in machine learning) because the more images that are processed, the better the software gets at recognizing and processing those images.

Data science is a concept used to tackle big data and includes data cleansing, preparation, and analysis. A data scientist gathers data from multiple sources and applies machine learning, predictive analytics, and sentiment analysis to extract critical information from the collected data sets. They understand data from a business point of view and are able to provide accurate predictions and insights that can be used to power critical business decisions.

In the future, AI will shorten your commute even further via self-driving cars that result in up to 90% fewer accidents, more efficient ride sharing to reduce the number of cars on the road by up to 75%, and smart traffic lights that reduce wait times by 40% and overall travel time by 26% in a pilot study.  I am very excited for the future.

The computing power of big data analytics enables us to decode entire DNA strings in minutes and will allow us to find new cures and better understand and predict disease patterns. Just think of what happens when all the individual data from smart watches and wearable devices can be used to apply it to millions of people and their various diseases.

Big data can be used it a smarter way tho. Curing a desease is treating the symptoms of a bigger problem, instead we should focus on improving our health in the future as robots take some of our daily tasks, thus we can stay healthier and happier.

Since the topic of this thread is Data for Good, here is one article that lists ten awesome examples of big data being used for good.

Article is very good written, representing all the aspects which are positive involving the big data. But are there any pitfalls ? I mean, everybody talks about the good side of the things, but there is another - it can be used for tracking people and eventally sold to offenders.

Big Data Analytics are used in a number of sectors to accomplish various things.  In Education it is used to update and upgrade prescribed literature for a variety of fields which are witnessing rapid development. Universities across the world are using it to monitor and track the performance of their students and faculties and map the interest of students in different subjects via attendance.

Fabricio,

In my opinion, the most obvious usage of Big Data is for targeting customers. Companies buy ( or exchange ) information, which is absolutely unacceptable for the community, I mean, without their permission. There are much more pros and cons for this topic, but overall, it depends on how one use it !

Edita Hornik

Big data is used to improve many aspects of our cities and countries. For example, it allows cities to optimize traffic flows based on real time traffic information as well as social media and weather data. A number of cities are currently piloting big data analytics with the aim of turning themselves into Smart Cities, where the transport infrastructure and utility processes are all joined up.

Do any of you live in a Smart City? :)

Big data is applied heavily in improving security and enabling law enforcement. I am sure you are aware of the revelations that the National Security Agency (NSA) in the U.S. uses big data analytics to foil terrorist plots (and maybe spy on people). Others use big data techniques to detect and prevent cyber attacks. Police forces use big data tools to catch criminals and even predict criminal activity and credit card companies use big data use it to detect fraudulent transactions.

The big data is in extended use in the field of medicine and healthcare. As the technology raises the cost of health care is also increasing more and more. Big data is a great helping hand in this issue. It is a great help for even physicians to keep track of all the patients’ history. The link to the patient’s history can be accessed only by the patient and his particular physician.

Dorothea,

Here is another way Big Data can be used in Healthcare.  The computing power of big data analytics enables us to decode entire DNA strings in minutes and will allow us to find new cures and better understand and predict disease patterns. Just think of what happens when all the individual data from smart watches and wearable devices can be used to apply it to millions of people and their various diseases. The clinical trials of the future won't be limited by small sample sizes but could potentially include everyone!

Yes, being able to predict what we dream tonight will indeed be fun and based on the information you have presented, it seems it is theoretically possible. Great video!
